BREAKING: UVA basketball head coach Tony Bennett retiring immediately
Tony Bennett is officially retiring from coaching the Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team.
This is a breaking story with very little information. Bennett will be addressing the media and the public on Friday morning at 11:00 AM ET when we will surely get some answers on the motivation for his sudden retirement and the plan for who will be UVA’s head coach moving forward. You can watch the live stream on Facebook here.
Given how shocking and immediate this news is, we at Streaking the Lawn wish Bennett and his family and friends well. Bennett is an absolute legend of the basketball world. He’s arguably the most impactful individual in the history of University of Virginia athletics.
Bennett brought UVA basketball back to the national stage after decades of mediocrity. He built a national championship program that stood for all the right things throughout a turbulent time in the world of college sports. His character as a coach and a leader of young men is absolutely unquestionable, and his legacy will be that of one of college basketball’s all-time great coaches and people.
Bennett deserves every bit of praise he is going to reserve in the coming days, weeks, months, and years. He’s a special person who has had an immeasurable impact on his players, on the university, and Virginia fans everywhere. He’ll never truly be replaced.
With that said, it seems almost certain that one of Bennett’s associate head coaches Ron Sanchez or Jason Williford will take the reigns as an interim head coach this season and potentially on from there. Both have been mainstays on Bennett’s staff with Sanchez’s five year stint as the head coach of Charlotte the only time they weren’t both on the Virginia staff since Bennett’s hiring.
With the 2024-25 season kicking off in less than a month, this is an incredibly turbulent moment for the program. Stay tuned to Streaking the Lawn for more news and analysis as we learn more about Bennett’s immediate retirement.
