On October 23, 2024, TikTok user Golden fam (@a_golden_fam) shared a video of the adorable Golden Retriever who really wanted to sleep with mama. Take a look!

In a short video posted on social media, we meet a cute Golden Retriever who has his own idea for how his sleep arrangement should be that night.

“Mama, can I come in and sleep in your room tonight?” the text on the video reads. And that’s when we can see the sweet dog dragging his bedmat through the door from another room in the house. He’s making those cute eyes dogs do when they’re trying to ask something without using words.

The sweet dog drags the bed through the room and places it next to his mom’s bed, wagging his tail the whole time.

When the bed is down and set right next to his mom’s bed, he lies down, curls his still-wagging tail, and puts his head down.

He looks like he’s the happiest dog in the world and not because he got what he wanted but because he wanted to cuddle and spend time with his human and found a way to be able to do that.

How Much Sleep Does a Golden Retriever Need?

Regarding dog parenting, it’s important to ensure we’re giving our babies what they need to grow, thrive, and live a healthy life. And sleep is a big part of that full equation. Some dog breeds can be expected to need more sleep than others, and it’s often tied to how much exercise is typical for that breed.

But sleep and exercise are also very individual for dogs—one pup of the same breed might need more rest for other reasons, for example. However, generalizations can help provide an overall snapshot of pet parenthood.

According to Golden Meadows Retrievers, an average Golden Retriever needs 12 to 14 hours of sleep each day.

“It’s normal for a Golden Retriever to sleep 12-14 hours per day,” the site explains. “If your dog is a puppy, it will likely sleep even longer. Sleep is essential for dogs to maintain their health and for puppies to grow.”

It wouldn’t be unusual for a Golden Retriever puppy to need to sleep up to 20 hours a day. Of course, if you’re ever worried, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and reach out to your veterinarian.
