New Orleans Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen fired
It’s official. Dennis Allen is out as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints.The Saints made the announcement on Monday morning. Allen was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in February 2022 after Sean Payton abruptly resigned following 16 seasons in New Orleans.His record as the Saints head coach was 18-25. Prior to becoming the Saints head coach, Allen spent 12 seasons in New Orleans as an assistant under Payton. He was the assistant defensive line coach during the 2006-2007 seasons, then moved to secondary coach from 2008-2010. Allen was part of the Saints Super Bowl XLIV championship coaching staff in 2009. From 2011 through 2014, he worked as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos and head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He returned to New Orleans in 2015 as a senior defensive assistant and became the defensive coordinator in 2016. Allen’s tenure will unfortunately be remembered mostly for failing to maintain the winning standard set by Payton.The Saints’ decision to promote Allen was largely based on continuity, believing the franchise’s success was bigger than just one person.Allen’s best and worst games as Saints head coach both arguably came against the archrival Falcons. Led by veterans Jameis Winston and Michael Thomas, the Black and Gold started the 2022 season with an epic comeback win in Atlanta against the Dirty Birds. That victory is one of the high-water marks of the Allen era.In the 2023 regular-season finale, the Saints beat the Falcons but tricked Atlanta players near the end of the game to secure a touchdown for running back Jamaal Williams. Following the game Allen apologized to the Atlanta Falcons organization, a move that drew intense criticism from the passionate Who Dat Nation. Professional, courteous and hard-working, Allen will likely return to the NFL during the 2025 or 2026 season as a defensive coordinator and could follow a path similar to that of Steve Spagnuolo. “Spags” was a fantastic, well-liked defensive coordinator who earned the opportunity to become a head coach with the Rams. But, after producing just a 10-38 overall record, he was fired. He’s since returned to being one of the top coordinators in the NFL, winning three Super Bowl championships with the Kansas City Chiefs.Allen issued the following statement after the announcement of his termination: “I want to take this opportunity to first and foremost thank Gayle Benson for the opportunity to be the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. The organization will always be near and dear to my heart and I am disappointed the results weren’t better. I also want to thank mickey Loomis for the support he and his staff provided throughout the entire time I was with the organization. “I am proud to have worked alongside some great coaches, both as an assistant and during my time as the head coach. To those men, I am sincerely grateful for the time and effort they put into their jobs. I am also grateful for the entire staff that worked hard to provide the support and will miss our daily interactions. “To every player, thank you for your efforts and contributions. As I said on Sunday, I never questioned your dedication and resolve and I am sorry the results weren’t better, because they were certainly deserved. “Lastly, to the Saints fans and residents of New Orleans, i want to thank you for your unwavering passion and support of the team. I realize what a privilege it is to coach a special franchise in a great city and I will fondly remember the opportunity I had to coach the Saints. “I wish everyone with the Saints the best of luck and success going forward.”
