Are Ozempic weight loss shots worth side effects? Do better options exist?

Chances are you have family or friends who have struggled with weight loss for years, losing weight on the latest fad just to gain it all back again and more. Today it is happening again with GLP1 agonists like Semaglutide with the brand names of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus and similar drugs like Moujaro and Zepbound.

And just like all the other weight loss fads and trends, people gain the weight back after they stop taking the drug. One recent study found that participants regained two-thirds of their weight one year after stopping the shots. The study concluded that patients needed to continue taking the drug indefinitely to keep the weight off.

Dr. Whit Roberts of Health Utah says he is concerned about more than just the regained weight. He is concerned about the financial costs and health risks potentially posed by these drugs.

The cost of these drugs

There is a heavy monetary cost of long-term drug treatment – potentially thousands of dollars every year. Then there are the health costs.

“We don’t yet know all the long-term side effects as this is a new trend among non-diabetic individuals,” Roberts says.

Research shows some of the most common short-term effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, increased hunger, and diarrhea. Less common or potentially serious side effects include thyroid cancer, gallbladder disorders, kidney damage, fatigue, headache, rash, hair loss, anxiety and dizziness.

Roberts, who has worked with obese patients for 30 years, described some of the lasting side effects he has seen among his patients. “I have seen side effects last long after patients discontinue the shots. These have included nausea, gastroparesis, bloating, fatigue, burping, stomach pain and weight gain.”

Roberts cites an article reporting one significant side effect to be an increase in visceral fat (dangerous fat around the organs). “Visceral fat is one of the most significant risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and fatty liver disease,” he says.

The best alternative

“The best alternative is identifying the underlying causes of stubborn weight and addressing them – not ignoring them. Weight gain is always a symptom or sign of chronic health problems. Drugs don’t cure chronic illnesses. The body can, however, if given proper nutrition and therapeutic help,” Roberts says.

The Health Utah method

Trained experts at Health Utah take the time for a proper evaluation of your underlying issues.

“No one-size-fits-all approach is going to work for everyone because differences exist between us,” Roberts notes.

The first step at Health Utah is to gather information through a proprietary survey that will give preliminary evidence of health issues. This is followed by a body scan that reveals a tremendous amount of physiological data (you get a 17-page report) that Roberts can use in evaluating your case. Roberts will then conduct a thorough review of your health history.

In speaking about the hour-long testing and evaluation at Health Utah, Roberts says, “People will likely learn more about their health in this one visit than they have in any other physical or consultation in the past.”

A specialized health and weight loss program will be recommended.

“There’s no cutting calories, no counting calories, no cutting out whole categories of food like carbs and no crazy fads like eating all meat or all fat. You will eat foods that feed your organs and provide nutrients for healing and balancing,” Roberts says.

Your program may include therapies such as desensitization to foods or a form of hypnotherapy. You will leave this appointment with very valuable information you can implement immediately.
