Back 4 Blood 2 in Development Under Codename “Gobi 2”

In 2021 Turtle Rock Studios launched Back 4 Blood, a spiritual successor to the acclaimed zombie franchise Left 4 Dead, created by some of the studio’s original developers.

While the game received mixed reviews, it still attracted a large player base, reaching over six million players within its first month of availability.

At the beginning of 2023, Turtle Rock announced the end of updates for Back 4 Blood to shift development resources to their next project, sparking speculation about what it could be. The most straightforward assumption to make was a sequel to Back 4 Blood, a theory supported by hints found in job listings. Now, we can add more fuel to this theory, as we have found intriguing information that could confirm the existence of this title.

Back 4 Blood 2 – Project… “Gobi 2”?

This information comes from the resume of actor and stuntman Jesse Hutch, who worked on motion capture for the first game. In his resume, alongside other games like Dead by Daylight and Gears of War 4, a project titled “Gobi 2” can be found listed under Turtle Rock Studios, a project that seems to be Back 4 Blood 2.

What leads us to think this is the sequel to Back 4 Blood? The original Back 4 Blood’s codename was “Gobi,” as seen on the game’s SteamDB page, making it logical to assume that Gobi 2 refers to its sequel.

To cement this theory, it’s worth mentioning that in May last year, the domain “back4blood2.com” was registered and remains active.

Gobi was also the name of the studio’s mascot, a Bearded Dragon who sadly passed away in 2018. A creature known as Gobi also appeared in studio’s 2015 release of Evolve, though we doubt “Gobi 2” is refers to a sequel to that game, given it’s reception at the time in both reviews and sales. It also had a codename of “Goliath” before it was officially revealed to the public.

While it may still be some time before we can confirm this sequel, we are thrilled at the prospect of the Left 4 Dead formula continuing to thrive, even outside the creative minds at Valve. We will keep you updated with any related news.
