NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 GPU: Blackwell Designed For Enthusiast Gamers!

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 is the upcoming GPU from the company, based on the Blackwell architecture. The RTX 5080 is reportedly the second fastest GPU in the RTX 50 lineup, following the RTX 5090, and is going to succeed the current-gen RTX 4080 & RTX 4080 SUPER GPUs.

NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 50 series is based on the Blackwell architecture and the RTX 5080 is going to be the second fastest in the series after the flagship RTX 5090 GPU. NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture is used in both data centers and gaming GPUs. The Blackwell GPUs will utilize a new custom 5nm process node, particularly the N5B.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 GPU is expected to take over the Ada-based GeForce RTX 4080 GPU by offering a noticeable performance lead in gaming and general graphical workloads. NVIDIA has been continuing the 80-class cards for generations and they used to be the fastest GPUs in the entire lineup until the Turing-based RTX 30 series GPUs made an entry and since then, we have the 90-class GPUs the fastest in the lineups.

The GeForce RTX 5080 – 2nd Fastest In The RTX 50 Lineup

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 is expected to feature the GB203-300-A1 die, which succeeds the AD103-300-A1 on the RTX 4080. It is going to feature the PG144/147-SKU45 PCB and is expected to feature with 84 SMs.

We currently don’t have detailed information on the die except for the base GPU configuration but we do have some leaked specifications for the GPU. We will update this section once we have the info on its GPU die but till now, expect NVIDIA to follow up with the same tier GPU die as used on the previous gens for 80-class cards.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Specifications

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 is reportedly going to feature 10,752 Cuda Cores and 84 SMs, which is an increase of about 10.5% compared to the 9,728 Cuda Cores and 76 SMs present on the RTX 4080. NVIDIA is expected to retain the same memory size on the RTX 5080 but with a newer GDDR7 memory type compared to GDDR6X on the RTX 4080.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 GPU will bring 16 GB of VRAM on a 256-bit bus and is expected to offer the fastest GDDR7 memory speed of up to 32 Gbps, bringing in about 1 TB/s of total memory bandwidth. A 1024 GB/s bandwidth will even put it ahead of the RTX 4090 GPU which offers 1007 GB/s of bandwidth.

The memory speeds are going to be even faster than what the RTX 5090 will bring to the table and is roughly 43% higher bandwidth than the RTX 4080 comes with. There was also a rumor recently, which suggests that the 5080 will have another edition bringing a 24 GB variant, which means 3 GB per module. However, the launch variant will only ship with 16 GB VRAM.

That said, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 is also going to bring a higher TBP than the RTX 4080 if 400W, which is 80W higher than the RTX 4080 (320W). The TBP is simply the peak power that the board can utilize and is not to be compared with actual power consumption which when looking at the RTX 40 GPUs has been lower than the actual wattage rating. The RTX 5080 will feature a single 12V-2×6 connector for its power requirements as the connector can deliver up to 600W.

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5080 –  Expected Performance

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 will replace the RTX 4080 and recent rumors suggest that it will offer 10% better performance than the RTX 4090. The RTX 5080 might be better at just Ray Tracing than RTX 4090 as going by the specifications, the RTX 4090 seems to have an edge over the 5080.

Nonetheless, several theories could prove both scenarios and we will need some concrete data to say whether the RTX 5080 is superior to RTX 4090 or not. Compared to the RTX 4080, it’s almost guaranteed that the 5080 will be much faster due to an upgrade in specs, which means we can see 60+ fps at 4K resolution in most titles. We should also remember that the RTX 4080 was 20-25% faster than the RTX 3090 and we can expect similar if not better gains from the RTX 5080.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 & 4080 SUPER have been delivering some solid performance in modern titles in both rasterization and ray tracing and we can expect the RTX 5080 to continue its domination at higher resolution, particularly at 4K since it brings a higher memory bandwidth.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Pricing

There aren’t any reliable leaks about the RTX 5080 GPU price. Similarly, there isn’t any reliable info about the pricing of any other RTX 50 series GPUs, including RTX 5090 and RTX 5070. It’s always unwise to talk about pricing before launch since it can change super late and sometimes even after the launch (although that’s very rare).

The RTX 4080 SUPER was launched at $1000 which was a slight cut versus the original model that retailed for $1199 US. Keeping that in mind, we are most likely looking at a price tag of around $1000 US but it would be great if we can get it anywhere below that since you’ll be getting the performance of a 4090-class graphics card which currently retails for around $2000 US at half the price.

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5080 – Release Date & Availability

NVIDIA finalized the design of the RTX 5080 along with the RTX 5090 in September 2024 but some reliable reports suggest that the RTX 5080 won’t be launched this year. NVIDIA is expected to reveal the RTX 5080 along with the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 in early 2025, most likely at CES, which will be held in January.
