Small Plane Crash Near Westchester County Airport Kills One
A small plane crashed on Thursday, killing one person on board, on a highway near the Westchester County Airport about five miles northeast of White Plains, the New York State Police said.
The single-engine plane crashed at around 7:15 p.m. after the pilot reported engine issues, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. A second person was also on the flight, the police confirmed, but their status was not immediately known.
The names of the people aboard the flight were not released. Neither the registration number of the plane, a Tecnam P2008, nor the plane’s flight plan were released.
Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York said on social media that the crash “caused an aviation gas spill” that the Department of Environmental Conservation was working to clean up.
The New York State Police said it was investigating the crash. The F.A.A. and the National Transportation Safety Board will also investigate.
Images of the crash showed a small plane in the median between northbound and southbound traffic on the Interstate 684 highway near the Westchester County Airport. Traffic on the highway was closed in both directions after the crash, the police said.
Westchester County Airport is on New York’s border with Connecticut. The airport did not immediately respond to a phone call or email seeking additional information.
