Opposition party politicians all hold K-pop lightsticks instead of the usual candles for impeachment protest
On December 13, a day before the impeachment vote against President Yoon Suk Yeol, several Democratic Party lawmakers, including Floor Leader Park Chan Dae, gathered on the steps of the National Assembly building in Yeouido, Seoul. Holding light sticks in their hands, they demonstrated their resolve to push for the president’s impeachment.
This was following trends of protesters holding up lightsticks from various K-pop fandoms during the protest demanding President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. Last week, hundreds of thousands gathered across Seoul for the rallies with K-pop fans bringing their lightsticks instead of the traditional candles.
This trend went viral online as K-pop fans showed off their repurposed lightstick and even politician Lee Hoon Gi bought a light stick to join the public in this movement.
Now many politicians and lawmakers have purchased these lightsticks, once only used in the K-pop culture, gathering together for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Notably, Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Jin Wook was seen holding a light stick from NCT with a “Yoon Suk Yeol Impeachment” sticker attached to it. Lawmaker Choi Min Hee carried a NewJeans light stick.
Other light sticks from popular artists and groups such as EXO, BTS, SHINee, and IU were also spotted at the scene. Alongside the K-pop artist light sticks, unique items like a blue star-shaped light stick and a long sword-shaped light stick were also used, adding a colorful and symbolic element to the protest.

It’s as if they’re saying they’ll create a world where young people, who have selflessly dedicated their immense love to the country, can once again love freely and without worry. It feels like a true moment of intergenerational connection.”

“This is funny but it’s also touching.”
