AND WE BEGIN WITH BREAKING NEWS AT TEN. A PARTIAL BUILDING COLLAPSES IN THE CBD, CLOSING A STRETCH OF O’KEEFE AVENUE JUST BLOCKS FROM POYDRAS. WE’RE TOLD POLICE AND FIRE OFFICIALS RESPONDED TO THAT BUILDING IN THE 600 BLOCK OF O’KEEFE. THAT’S BETWEEN GERRARD AND LAFAYETTE STREETS. THE BUILDING WAS REPORTEDLY EVACUATED, AND THE NYPD SHUT DOWN O’KEEFE TO KEEP PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS SAFE. WELL, MORGAN, LIKE YOU SAID, I’M HERE AT 611 O’KEEFE AVENUE, WHERE A BUILDING IS SHOWING SERIOUS SIGNS OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. YOU HAVE MULTIPLE BUSINESSES SURROUNDING AND A VERY, VERY LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEX RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. ALL OF THOSE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED. AND O’KEEFE AVENUE IS SHUT DOWN BETWEEN GERRARD AND POYDRAS STREET. POLICE AND FIRE CREWS ARE WORKING TO SECURE THE AREA, WHILE A CITY INSPECTOR EVALUATES THE BUILDING’S STABILITY. NOW HERE’S WHAT NEW ORLEANS FIRE CAPTAIN HAD TO SAY. IT LOOKS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HERE. IT’S ONE OF THE REASONS WE STOPPED TRAFFIC. WE’RE NOT SURE HOW BAD THIS BUILDING IS COMPROMISED. A portion of O’Keefe Avenue in the city’s Central Business District was closed to traffic Saturday night.Officials with the New Orleans Fire Department confirmed to WDSU that a building in the 600 block of O’Keefe Avenue, between Girod and Lafayette streets, is at risk of partially collapsing.Right now, it is unclear what may have prompted the collapse, but officials say they have evacuated several buildings in the immediate area.That part of the CBD is heavily traveled by vehicles and pedestrians. People are being asked to avoid the area until further notice.
