On Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Central and Northern Oregon Cascades that begins at 8 p.m.

Heavy snow is expected above 4000 feet with total accumulations up to 20 inches, the agency said.

NWS Portland and NWS Pendleton say the coordinated warnings will stay in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes,” NWS Portland said for motorists going over Cascade passes. “If you must travel, be sure to slow down and allow extra time. If your car becomes trapped in deep snow, be sure to keep your car off to stay safe from potential carbon monoxide poisoning.”

NWS Pendleton says the eastern slopes of the Cascades could see 8 to 16 inches above 4000 feet. This includes places such as Black Butte Ranch, Sisters, La Pine, and Sunriver.

“Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets, and extra clothing,” NWS Pendleton said in their warning message. “Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.”

Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Allison Gutleber will have the latest forecast at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. on Sunday and Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby will begin coverage Morning on KATU News this morning at 4:30 a.m.
